This group is called The Consumer Advocates for Smoke-free Alternatives Association (CASAA).

Who Are They – What Are Their Goals?

CASAA is a non-profit group that was created by concerned citizens. They believe strongly that tobacco harm reduction (THR) products are a suitable method of combating the damage that tobacco products do. Their mission is clear: to keep helpful THR products available for the citizens of the world. With representatives in five separate countries, they are able to monitor current events and effect changes in laws and public opinion. It is against their own rules to allow more than a third of their organization to be made up of retailers, who might profit from THR products being widely available.

How They Started

The group was formed in 2009 as a backlash against attempts to ban the sale of electronic cigarettes and other smokeless tobacco devices. In 2008, The WHO (World Health Organization) was insisting that e-cigarettes be banned around the world and advocates of the product were desperate to keep them freely available. The FDA has since attempted to prove why electronic cigarettes should to be banned or treated as being in the same category as tobacco products. People worldwide who use electronic cigarettes are worrying about unfair legislation being introduced that would hinder their access to E-cigarettes and E-liquids, and their fears are not unfounded.

In many ways, politicians care more about perception than they do about sound science, because votes are all about perception. There is no sound research to suggest that E-cigarettes contain anything more dangerous to the human body than nicotine. • Firstly, dispel the myths.

It was Mark Twain who once remarked; “A lie can travel halfway round the world while the truth is putting on its shoes “.

That was once true, and still is to some extent, but the truth now has a fair chance of at least booking it’s flights to the other side of the world, before the lie gets too far ahead. Thanks to the advent of the internet, misconceptions and outright lies can be defeated by the truth. If you care about your freedom to be able to use an E-cig, it’s up to you to spread the truth wherever these lies appear.

That doesn’t mean engaging in a shouting match; it simply means outlining the truth, and using facts to back up your claims. So if you see the claim that; “E-cigs contain anti-freeze” on the web, calmly state the truth, providing links to factual information to back up your argument.

Recognize that E-cigs have the stigma of smoking attached.

• Smoking (whatever your feelings about personal freedoms) has a bad reputation. That much cannot be denied. Movies have even required editing because some of the characters have been smoking in the picture.
• And though E-cigarettes are an entirely different form of nicotine delivery, they suffer from the same stigma.
• Remember, politicians care about perception. So if E-cigs are perceived to be the same as cigarettes, they may be subject to the same, or similar laws; no matter what they are. It’s up to us to prevent that from happening.

Firstly, we can be polite, and not use our E-cig in establishments that object.

• Instead, it’s much better to ask for permission, and explain the difference between E-cigs and cigarettes. Instead of having a bar owner, or a café owner who wants to throw you out and ban E-cigs, you could have someone on your side. Just by being polite enough to ask.
• Secondly, do not try and circumvent rules on smoking by “stealth-vaping”. If you’re having to hide what you’re doing, people may think of you using an E-cig to cheat in-door cigarette bans.
• If your workplace objects to the use of an E-cig in-doors, then wait until you have a break. As before, ask your colleagues if they mind and explain what they are. And if they do not mind, do it out in the open.
• Being belligerent is a sure way to turn people’s perception against you. It’s not a case of exercising personal freedom, more a case of bad manners.
• Marketers could also avoid selling E-cigarettes as a way to quit smoking.
• Keep E-liquids and E-cigs out of the reach of children.

It cannot be stressed enough how important this is. Many draconian legislation brought in worldwide is the result of claiming to protect children. In many ways, it’s often the first port of call for the would-be tyrant.

• In the UK, the government is trying to pass legislation to filter internet search results via ISP, in the guise of protecting children from viewing internet pornography. If it goes ahead; it will affect adults as well as children. The reason children are often used, is because it’s very difficult to argue against protecting children because….who doesn’t want to protect children?
• In Australia, violent videogames were banned, even when they were marketed and intended for use by adults. 
• So, can you imagine what would happen if a spate of incidents occurred of children drinking candy flavored E-liquids who then got very sick?

This means that as adults, we have to be very responsible, and keep any E-liquids out of the reach of small hands. Up to and including; locking them away in a medicine cabinet, and NEVER leaving them out in the open unattended. Likewise, if we have young children around, it would perhaps be prudent to only use a very low nicotine content E-liquid or even a zero nicotine liquid, in the event of the unthinkable happening.

• We should perhaps also limit our use in-front of children, and if we find that our teenage sons or daughters are using an E-cig, we should definitely confiscate it immediately, with the same vigor that we would confiscate a pack of cigarettes.

E-Cigarettes are under attack from what seems like all sides. Misinformation is being spread by lobby groups representing some of the biggest corporations on the planet – namely Big Pharma (see any of the sites in our news feed to learn more, but CASAA and TobaccoAnalysis Dr. M Seigel’s blog, are exceptional places to start).

Conflicts of interest (often undisclosed funding in the tens of millions of dollars by big pharma or in one case big tobacco was shown to be footing the bill for a past anti-smoking project to the tune of $20+ million) these conflicts are between malinformed doctors, well informed regulators, key positions of influence at agencies and non-profit groups, the FDA itself or the many research institutes, anti-smoking groups and unniversity departments who have made it clear through increasingly loud and manipulative spin in the media – and their own often absurd comments.

An increasingly public, noisy and hard to defend (money makes anything possible it seems) campaign of legal bills, PR campaign and anything else at their disposable is being waged and the FDA we know is announcing a ‘proposal’ for regulatory action that would inhibit the ecigarette essentially out of existence.

Whether intended or not (I believe many are not willing & knowing accomplices – yet are buying into the anti ecig propoganda that results from getting sound-bites – like the all too famous ‘ecigs contain antifreeze’ crap that has been regurgitated for years now ad infinitum (to read the specifics on that one check out this post) big pharma’s deep deep pockets and tenticles are able to reach the very places such as university science labs where respected studies would be done), these various parties would like nothing more than the end of electronic cigarettes. This would be a disaster for the 5-8 Million Americans who use the devices in the place of tobacco death sticks. There is a huge body of evidence in support of e-cigarettes that is simply being ignored or if acknowledged at all used to confuse and worry the public more by shifting the focus to frame positive medical studies that should vindicate the ecig into scare campaign of BS at times in my opinion what could be seen as potentially fraudulent it is so shameless.

but there is still hope – we all need to help. If you care about the well-being of millions of American smokers and hundreds of millions of others across the globe who either already have or soon will have their lives profoundly bettered with freedom to choose to use E-Cigarettes as a free choice based on the strong evidence that continues to emerge as to the Harm Reduction Benefits of using Electronic Smokeless Cigarettes – HARM REDUCTION – no other product has ever held out anything like the potential for a truly revolutionary aid for smokers to improve their own lives in such great numbers.
